Intro to Research

Based on the research lesson we had today in the library take the word you’ve chose and research the word in 5 separate sources. In your research you should be looking for things like explanations about the word or idea, history, etymology, importance of etc***
Once you’ve completed your research write a short 300-400 word summary, of what you’ve learned about your word, in this summary you will need to use parenthetical citations. This due Friday February 29th no later than 11a.m.

These parenthetical citations will be linked to the next part of your assignment. Using those 5 source create an annotated bibliography. For guidelines on how to do this see pages 144-45 and 167-168 in The Everyday Writer. You will submit a print out of this annotated bibliography on Monday March 10th

Please note you cannot use Google, Wikipedia or any other internet search engines to complete this project.
.

*** Please note if you are researching a word, you cannot just find an article where the word appears.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Who am I?

Do some research on the author of your text. Find out what else they’ve written, sung etc (if you are doing a film look at the director). Next find out anything you can about their lives, their backgrounds, their political beliefs or passions. Try to locate the information in more than one source to confirm its validity. Once you’ve located this information consider how you might use this to help to talk about the author’s ethos in the text you are using for your paper.

On your blog write in a 300 word entry NOT about you found but the process you went through to find that information. Where did you look, and why did you decide to look where you looked. What were some of the advantages and disadvantages to looking the place you did?

This is due on Friday February 22nd by 11am.

Ps. Feel free to use anything you find to help you in discussing the author’s ethos briefly in your paper, just don’t go overboard and remember to always cite your sources!

Exploring...

Go to the library and find one of the sources from the reference list in “The Rebirth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Hip Hop: A Cultural Sociology of Gangsta Rap Music” by Alexander Riley (pg 34 and 35 in your Course Packet). Read the first couple of pages or paragraphs of the book, and the inside flap. Next, see what you can find out about the author. In a 200-300 word summary on your blog tell me why this book might be interesting to you, and what you learned about the author that made them a good candidate for writing this book or article.
If you need help with this assignment ask me, or ask a reference librarian, we will both be HAPPY to help!

Due Friday February 15th at 11am.

On your blog respond in a 200 word entry about how your peer review went. What worked well, what didn’t? What might you do differently next time?

***** Just a quick reminder, Feb. 6th is upon us! By that date you should have read and left comments on one blog entry for two different classmates.

Getting Started

Hi everyone,
Here are the quotes we used in class today to get you start thinking about your paper topics. Remember you don't want to argue any of the specifics of these quotes, but use them to help you consider questions that might eventually become your claim. Have a great weekend

o “College is like a fountain of knowledge - and the students are there to drink”

o “If you tell folks you're a college student, folks are so impressed. You can be a student in anything and not have to know anything. Just say toxicology or marine biokinesis, and the person you're talking to will change the subject to himself. If this doesn't work, mention the neural synapses of embryonic pigeons.”
~ Chuck Palahniuk

o “College is a refuge from hasty judgment. ~Robert Frost

o “A telephone survey says that 51 percent of college students drink until they pass out at least once a month. The other 49 percent didn't answer the phone.” ~Craig Kilborn

o “It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.” ~Albert Einstein

o“If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library.” ~ Frank Zappa

o“The most conservative persons I ever met are college undergraduates. The radicals are the men past middle life.” ~ Woodrow T. Wilson

o“I am often amazed at how much more capability and enthusiasm for science there is among elementary school youngsters than among college students.”~ Dr. Carl Sagan
