Paper 2 Conferences

Here is the schedule for conferences next week. Remember missing your confrence constitutes three days of missed class. Students who are late to conferences will not have the opportunity to reschedule since as you can see we are on a very tight schedule. Drafts of your paper should be in my box in the English Department office (924 GCB) or on the door of my office (966 GCB) 24 hours prior to your confrence time (those who have Monday, and ONLY those who have Monday conferences can email me their drafts.)
Because of conferences I also won't be holding any office hours Apr 14-18. Please email me if you have questions.
Remember your draft should be no fewer than 8 pages long and should include an MLA style works cited sheet. Come to conference armed with questions, I look forward to talking to each of you about your papers.

Status Update

Go through the following four readings we’ve done in our subculture unit and identify the following
1. The claim (what is this piece arguing?)
2. The style of argument (classical, toumlin or rogerian)

• “Transmissions from Camp Trans”
• “Dark Webs Goth Subcultures in Cyberspace”
• “The Truck Stop as Community and Culture”
• “House for the Homeless”

After you’ve posted this entry post a paragraph explaining to me where you are in your process, what you have done, what you still have left to do, and a question you intend to pose to your peer review group on Monday ( your question shouldn’t be “is this any good?”)

This is due by 11am Friday April 4th

First Fieldsite Observation

On Friday you should visit the field site you plan to observe for this project. As you conduct your observations consider the following:

*What is going on in the field site
*How do the members of the subculture interact with each other?
*Make a list of terminology used at the fieldsite with which you might be unfamiliar.
*What details, behaviors, surroundings did you have questions about?
*Find at least one person at your fieldsite you can speak to and ask them a question about something you observed that you didn't understand.

Post an observation report on your blog by MONDAY MARCH 31st at 9AM

Note: your observations should have complete sentences, paragraphs and punctuation!

Links to help you get started...

Hi everyone,
I've enjoyed seeing what each of you has decided to research. As predicted I will need to speak to some of you on Monday regarding some topic overlap.
To help you begin your research I've posted some links about subcultures and researching subcultures under the links sections. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!

Starting subcultures

On your blog post the following things:
1. The subculture that you are researching.
2. Using your newly acquired skills go to the library and find 5 sources (books, articles films) etc that pertain to your subculture. On your blog post citations for the five sources
3. Choose one of the sources from your list and read a little from it and write a short (100 word) reflection on why this text might be interesting or useful to you in this project. Do not SUMMARIZE the text. This is due Friday March 14th by 11am.

So your blog entry should look like this:

Topic: Third culture kids

Sources:
Bowman, Darcia Harris. “Identities Blur for 'Third-Culture Kids.” Education Week 20.34 9 May 2001.

Ebbeck, Marjory. Transitions: third culture children. Australian Journal of
Early Childhood
30.31 Sep 2005
--- “The experiences of third-culture children.” Global migration and education: Schools, children, and families. Leah Adams, ed. Mahwa: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers, 2006.

Fritz, Jean. Homesick, my own story. New York: Putnam, 1982.

Pollock, David C. The third culture kid experience:
growing up among worlds.
Yarmouth: Intercultural Press, 1999.

Reflection: I really liked The third culture kid experience : growing up among worlds it gave me some ideas about how broad this sub culture is. I think that one of the things that I may need to do it to focus my research a little a at this point. The book’s focus was mainly on immigrants in Australia and Denmark, because I don’t have access to people within this subculture, and I think that it might present some other challenges I need to focus on north American and Jamaican especially maybe.
One thing it also mentioned was missionary kids. While that was really interesting I don’t think that is the focus that I want to take. I think that kids of missionaries probably even have a more separate subculture that is more focused on religion family life etc. The bibliography in this book though lead me to three or four other great sources I think I want to check out as a part of my process.
